George Town

George Town is about 50km N Launceston at the mouth of the Tamar River. First settled in 1811, has historic buildings, maritime museum lighthouse. Important commercial center and extensive fruit-growing area. Strawberries farm at Hillwood, south of the town, where visitors can pick their own fruit in season. Ruins of Lefroy, a 19th century gold-mining town nearby.
