Radio City Music Hall

Through the Stage Door

Going behind the scenes at studios and theaters around the country

In the 1920’s, Lord and Lady Mountbatten were so curious about how movies were made that they requested—and received—a private tour of the Chaplin Studios in Los Angeles, from Charlie himself.

Today, one needn’t be titled to learn the secrets of a Hollywood film factory, or of any other inner sanctum of high or low culture, be it a grand opera house, national network television studio, classical music concert hall, Las Vegas hotel stage, or opulent old-time movie palace. – Stephen M. New York City: Carnegie Hall

On May 5, 1891, Tchaikovsky conducted on opening nigth at Andrew Carnegie’s $1.1 million gift to the city. The risk was that music lovers might not venture to the then out-of-the-way corner 57th Street and Seventh Avenue—but they did. Saved from the wrecker’s ball in the early sixties and renovated top to bottom in 1986 at a cost of $60 million, Carnegie Hall remains the nation’s most prestigious stage.
