New York City: Metropolitan Opera House

The original Met, built at Broadway and 39th Street in 1883, was demolished in 1966 when the “new” met opened as the showcase of Lincoln Center. The operative word for this 90-minute tour is thorough: visitors walk through backstage security, dressing rooms, wig and costume shops, prop and wardrobe storage, the set-construction department, even onto the great state itself. Tours run from the September start of the opera season through the end of the ballet season in June. 30 Lincoln Center. 212/769-7000
