New Orleans: Saenger Theater

The classical garden that surrounds the proscenium of this 68-year-old, 2,800-seat Florentine Renaissance autitorum is strictly a stage set, though the 778-pipe Robert Morton Wonder organ is fully operational. Once a great movie house, the still-glorious Saenger now welcomes toruing shows, concert artists, and dance companies. Visitors can see the cloud machine works and how starts dot the ceiling. 143 N. Rampart St. 504/525-1052

That is not a picture of the Saenger Theatre in New Orleans. It is a picture of the Saenger Theatre in Mobile, Alabama.

The New Orleans Saenger Theatre looks nothing like that. Notice there is no garden in the picture, no sky, no stars, no clouds.

There were over 300 theatres in the Saenger chain all over the southeast, 10 or so of them named Saenger, and they were all different.
